Always an enjoyable and consistent experience at Harkers.....cosy ambiance, super food and friendly professional service. However...our experience last Saturday lunchtime marred by a group of very loud and ignorant men at the next table, old enough to know better than to behave like childish yobs. Would be good if staff could be trained to deal with these louts who spoil the Harker's reputation.

What a fabulous pub - a great selection of pump beers, lagers, ciders and wine plus a fabulous selection of food available. A very welcoming pub and I chose a walking guide from there to do a walking tour with. The Old Harker Arms in Chester is a charming, canal-side pub located just a 5-minute walk from Chester railway station and around a 15-minute stroll from the historic Chester Cross. Known for its classic British menu, I tried the Beer-Battered Fish and Chips and opted for garden peas instead of mushy peas, which was a nice touch. The fish was coated in a crispy, golden beer batter, and the chips were thick and perfectly cooked, balancing a crunchy exterior with a fluffy inside. The pub also boasts an impressive selection of craft ales, which makes it easy to find a great pairing for your meal. The combination of traditional fare, great beers, and a convenient location makes The Old Harker Arms an excellent choice for anyone visiting Chester.

The Old Harkers Arms in Chester is probably the best pub in the World! Scenically placed by the canal, with great food but it's the staff that really make it. They literally can't do enough for you, always welcoming and attentive. I started going about a year ago and now travel to Chester every week just to visit this pub. I don't know how they maintain such a level of service across all staff members but I'm never disappointed. Special shout out to Mark who, having finished his shift, with coat on and half way out the door, spotted my nearly empty glass and came back in to pour and deliver me another pint before he left! A characterful pub, like all B and P pubs, in good location by the Shropshire Union canal and a lively spot. Usual excellent range of drinks. However having just popped in for a drink we were surprised at how badly managed the pub was. Empty glasses on our table didn't get removed all the while we were there (and at other tables), staff standing around chatting, manager (I assume) chatting to one table all the while......you can immediately tell if somewhere is poorly managed. The manager should be sent to The Architect or the Grosvenor Arms for a few days (other B and P pubs) for training in excellence!

Chester On a recent visit to Chester, relatives booked a table at Harkers for an evening meal. This is the third time over the past few years we have visited Harkers in the evening. On this recent visit we found the venue very busy and extremely hot inside [cooler outside, but the tables were full]. What I noticed on our last visit and this most recent visit is the abundance of dogs inside the building. We love dogs, but this pub is serving food in very close proximity to dogs and with the constant flow of people walking through with their dogs to the loos, there was considerable interacting/barking at dogs sitting on the floor, it was all a bit manic . Therefore we would not recommend this pub if you want to eat , as its prices reflect restaurant charges but the hygiene and dog free surroundings are lacking . A few days later a neighbour told us they have a ‘’dog free area’’ if you walk to the left once in the pub. We were not aware of this, nor was the person who booked the table. I suggest when people book they are informed of this option by the staff. Obviously it seems when the dog free zone is full your booking is put in the dog area .Other visitors informed us this pub is known as a’’ no children allowed pub’’, please check with pub if this is true, before visiting. We won’t be going there again for a meal, as besides having to share the space with dogs [towards the end of our meal, we had a very large German shepherd and collie at the table next to us].the meals were mediocre and overpriced, £16.95 for a beef burger and a mean portion of chips . Even though the pub sits next to the canal ,an investment of air conditioning or ceiling fans would really be an improvement during Summer months. The main problem was the amount of canine visitors, and the obvious oplressive heat, which I noticed most dogs were wearing fur coats ! They do not have a choice of where they are taken and some dogs do not do well in oppressive heat, especially if they cannot find shade or relief from the heat. I am astounded at the fact that management wouldnt provide air conditioning as pubs local to me do! Given the oppressive heat and the amount of food and smells of food around, it was tortureous to the dogs there. Most people choose not to eat in front of their dogs, my husband usually has our one in his room during meals, and he usually gets less food than the dog! I would call the pub BARKERS and hope that they at least aquire some air con ! The food is basic pub fayre not bad quality and staff ( Who must also suffer in the heat) did their best. Mrs Muir

Having a child with SEN needs makes you judge places like this in a vastly different way. With 3 children to navigate around a popular children’s destination as a lot of families do, it’s crucial and very considerate of the location to offer some support/adaptations to the experience to make it inclusive to all parents and children. My eldest son of 6 has complicated genetic issues and strong autism characteristics. Sadly cheshire ice cream farm failed on this miserably. There were zero provisions for autistic children or children with differing issues. Small things like being able to go on rides without queuing for half an hour which is impossible for my son and a lot of similar children makes the experience better for all. In other parks around the world this is widely accepted as we’ve experienced and most other parents are generally understanding. Whether we were queuing for rides or snacks and ice cream, it was hugely stressful for my son who doesn’t understand we have to queue. No staff of parents offered to let us go first and it became increasingly stressful and we felt like a hindrance rather than being welcomed and able to relax and enjoy the facilities like everyone else. The arcade area of the restaurant that my son would have enjoyed to calm him down was up some stairs which would have limited access for any wheelchair bound children wanting to use this facility. It was also years 7 and under. To which we were told because my son was 6 he would have to leave immediately. And as the room was a welcome rest item for him this only added to the stress for us as he wanted to stay and play for 5 minutes. Safe to say we won’t be returning to Cheshire ice cream farm anytime soon and urge any other parents of SEN children to do the same.
