Went for the lunch deal. Booked and sat in the Ursula carriage. Absolutely freezing in there so we sat with coats on. Food arrived quickly and starters were okay however I had ordered lasagne for my main and it was absolutely inedible. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything as bad in my life. Dripping with grease and looked revolting. Picture was taken after I had already tried to dab some grease off. Server came to ask how our meals were and I explained it was disgusting, she asked if there was anything else I would like and I said no, as most people had finished eating by this point. Bill came and it was still on there, had to ask for it to be taken off which they did (fair enough).

This is the 3rd time we have been here for a meal. Always best to book as it can get pretty busy at the weekend. The 1st time we ate here it was amazing! Good service, good food and good atmosphere. The 2nd time was very different. The service was poor, the atmosphere felt tense and the food wasn't up to the same standard as last time, but the manager gave us a full refund and apologised. This time we booked a table of 4 in Ursula carriage. As we were dining with another family member. This is the carriage we prefer as its a more comfortable and cosier carriage. You can also book a table in the actual restaurant if you prefer. Service started quite poorly, as we waited at the door to be greeted and seated. Drinks order was taken straight away and they did take a little while to arrive but they did seem pretty busy. Food order was taken and food arrived pretty quickly. By this time we had broken the ice with the staff and they were very friendly and attentive. We had 3 courses and 2 rounds of drinks for 3 people. Food was fantastic and our guest loved the whole experience! It's an amazing pub/restaurant with the added quirkiness of the trains. The whole place (especially the trains) could do with an injection of cash to update it all as it would be a shame to see such a unique place close down as many pubs have in recent years. We will definitely return.

Great value food especially on the lunch menu. Pullman carriages need a bit of tlc on the outside but as a small business owner I can forgive this as times are tough and all the essentials were in place - food, service and value. I hope the new manager is able to get the carriages repainted outside as is the plan apparently. Outside of the train carriages the place appears to have been refurbished and love the area for kids as well - a great idea! Was reasonably busy when we arrived and was filling up as we left (early evening) which was great to see. Will definitely be back!

Not sure if I went to the same restaurant as other people but I was extremely disappointed. Having been 7/8 yrs ago and had a great experience I booked a table for 4 to celebrate 2 birthdays. Upon first impressions the outside certainly needs some love as there was no kind of welcoming entrance, such as plants, lighting and in fact the doors look like some kind of Travelodge. Inside was fairly dark, but we had booked one of the carriages. We proceeded to the carriage, and I appreciate that these have an old-fashioned hue about them but they have clearly been left to deteriorate from my previous visit. From where I was sat, I could see dust and cobwebs along the wooden areas. I opened one of the windows to be met with more dust and cobwebs. And when I pulled back one of the curtains to open a further window (the carriage was very stuffy) I saw the aligned carriage which had certainly seemed better days externally to the point that it had black duct tape hanging off it. Our table had crumbs on it and when we went to the toilet, the sink was filthy. To be honest at this point, we did consider leaving as it was so dirty, but we decided the food would be the resounding feature. We had the two course lunchtime special and to be fair the first course was delicious. Admittedly smaller portions than if you had ordered from the main menu, but that’s to be expected for the price. We all had different desserts and they were below par. The Apple crumble had no flavour whatsoever, it was just pieces of warm apple (no sauce, no sugar, no flavour) under crumble top. The Eton mess was a small bowl of whipped cream, a measly scattering of berries on top and a smaller scattering of meringue on top of those. It wasn’t even mixed together. The banana split was pretty sad and the lemon meringue cheesecake was the best of the desserts and it was nice enough but not wow. They had no Pepsi or Coke in the restaurant at all which we found very strange for a pub/restaurant on a Saturday afternoon. The staff were not very professional, clearly not trained and the waitress proceeded to tell us how hot and sweaty she was as she cleared our plates away . All in all it was a bad experience, I was embarrassed as I had suggested this for a birthday meal . The whole place needs a complete refurbishment or at minimum a deep clean. Unfortunately, I would never return and I would not suggest anybody going to this place.

Arrived at The Spotgate at 6.55pm to be seated for 7pm. On going up to the steps of the carriage, paper printed menus thrust in our hands. Once seated asked what we'd like to drink. Drinks came straight away, no problem, food ordered. At approximately 7.35pm we got our starters, now correct me if I'm wrong but I thought goujons were strips ? I got lumps of soggy battered fish not the strips I'd imagined. My husband had the calamari which look over cooked heavily battered lumps, we ate it but it wasn't the best starter we've ever had. Plates got cleared after at around 7.55pm when my husband asked for another drink. I asked my 7yr old granddaughter if she'd like another coke, which she didn't, to which the waitress replied "oh ! how unusual a child refusing a drink!", well no, it's not unusual, if she doesn't want one then she doesn't want one. The table to the side of us whilst we were waiting had all three courses, then asked if the chairs were comfier in the bar. At 8.30 still no mains and granddaughter was getting hungry, so we asked if they were going to be much longer? The waitress said she'd see. She did come back and say we were next to be served. The table behind us then asked when they were going to be served having waited as long as we had. Within minutes their meal arrived with ourselves still waiting. By 8.55pm I had had enough, my granddaughter was now not just hungry but tired. We went to the bar and offered to pay for the drinks but not the starters, to be greated with "well your food is ready now" too little to late ! The male member of staff tried to justify the wait by saying they had had a big party in and that was why there was such a delay. That really isn't my problem, I don't expect to be eating my main meal 2hrs after sitting in a dark dingy carriage with nobody coming to us to explain or express there apologies for the wait. It's a shame really, they are really missing out on what could be a lovely dining experience. Tablecloths on the table would be a start. We took our granddaughter with us because she's Harry Potter mad, the carriage could have been an excellent experience for her but instead she left hungry and tired. I remember going to The Spotgate many years ago when the trampolines were out the back, packed every night , food and dining a great experience. What happened? NEVER AGAIN !!

Booked here today for my birthday lunch. Have fond memories from eating here over the years. We arrived and no staff were to be seen. Waited 10 minutes for someone to come to us. The carriages are tired and it was very quiet for a Sunday Lunch. Food was very average. I love a roast beef dinner, this one was tasteless and the gravy like water. Feeling disappointed and won't be returning. As we entered the carriage 2 of the customers complained that their meal was stone cold which put us off.

The food overall was nice. However my mother who ordered a roast dinner became ill and sick all night ( it was the only thing she ate that day). I have a feeling it was the horseradish or the cream she had with her dessert. Another thing was the 2 courses for £17 which only included the roast dinner and a dessert (it didn't state this in the description). On a positive note the service and servers were brilliant and the building was lovley.

Just OK sadly….haven’t been for years and thought I would give it a try for a celebatory meal for my daughter. Carriages run down, flies around windows, carpets filthy. Menu is minimal but we were told on arrival that a lot of items were not available, which is bizarre, everything from pork loin to soup! Service lax, staff nice enough but unkempt. Main meals were OK, chips looked re heated on two of the meals, bit tasteless, brioche bun soggy, no meals were finished, at no point were we asked if all was OK either Desserts I’m told were nice Waited for 10 minutes to get the bill so went to find the staff who were chatting at the bar Such a shame that this once beautiful thriving restaurant is so run down The place was empty which is probably a sign that should have warned me to not cross the threshold I won’t be back, I’ll stick to Black Lake or Swynnerton where there is always a good meal to be had Disappointed and wishing I’d spent £80 somewhere else

We visited on Sunday 28th July 2024 at 1 oclock. We took advantage of the 3 course sunday lunch offer. The food that we had was lovely no real complaints. However the service was some what lacking. We ordered drinks and all the courses all at once but unfortunately it took almost an hour before we had our starters, all were very nice, another 35mins after we had finished to wait for the Sunday roast which we had items missing that were on the menu and had to ask for separately. Once we finished we sat around for 25 minutes before one of us found a member of staff to clear our table and ask for dessert. Again we waited 20 minutes for them to turn up. Now I don't normally moan about service staff because they do work hard and I can fully understand if the place was full and really busy, but on this occasion it wasn't it was a quiet Sunday with only a hand full of people actually dining. 8 cars on the carpark when we arrived. I have no issues with the food we had it was lovely but my experience has put me off from going again.

I’m writing this review on behalf of my mum as she isn’t very good with technology…. She attended The Spotgate Inn on Saturday 6th July with the rest of the family to celebrate a couple of birthdays on the same day. Our meal was a little disappointing, the chips were lukewarm, the rice was stodgy and the plates were cold, also the decor was looking a little tired in one of the carriages and could do with a little bit of TLC. She posted a comment on one of their Facebook posts and it has been deleted and she has now been blocked from their page not how a company should conduct their business.

Sadly not what is used to be several years ago. Went for a special birthday occasion. Service was slow and appeared quite disorganised. The Sunday roast meal I had was dire. Fatty tuff beef, roast potatoes were black in the middle, most of the vegetables appeared to be of the frozen variety, very small portions. A flat, what was supposed to be, Yorkshire pudding and to top it off instant mashed potato. 5 out of the 10 of us had the 'roast' dinner and we all were left disappointed. Others who ordered other dishes off the menu said they were ok. I did not complain at the time as it was a gathering for a special birthday which may have ruined the afternoon. The area we were in was not very clean either. Cutlery was given to us for the starters wet in what looked like a dishwasher receptacle. We were though given clean dry cutlery for the main meals. We were also promised some birthday banners in the area, these were not present. Overall I cannot recommend and will certainly not be going back unless things drastically improve.

Pleasant staff, and a quaint setting…sadly the food was a huge disappointment - completely devoid of any flavour. The lasagne was grey in colour and even less inspiring in flavour, even after adding plenty of seasoning myself. My partner’s choice of fish and chips was seemingly an easy win. Sadly, the fish didn’t taste of anything. Nothing at all. Quite remarkable. Our chips were so dry, we assumed they’d been prepared in the Sahara during drought season. Needless to say, we won’t return.

Great place for a meal . Have offers through out the week £12 for 2 courses £16 for 3 courses. There are tables inside, two old train coaches but be warned it’s very nice to sit in them for meals but you need to be quite slim to do so . There are other places to sit . It wasn’t to busy but.would still prebook. Staff were friendly . There quite a variety on the menu . There were so old traditional puddings available like banana split and chocolate fudge cake with mint custard that we were pleased about . I had lasagna it was a bit dry as been over microwaved but was nice . I would go back . There is a free car park on a bank . Quite easy to miss the turning for the car park . Each of us spent £20 for 2 courses and a drink. It was great for a catch-up and a chat . We stayed for 3 hours . Wouldn’t be able to do this at the weekend as it gets quite busy from what staff were saying.

Came a couple of weeks ago, had booked a table and had brought friends who were visiting. On the telephone the person was very helpful and friendly. I did book a table outside of the trains as there were 6 of us, but we were placed on 2 tables across from each other in the 'economy/standard' carriage. The rest of my party said they were fine, but in hindsight I wished we had moved. My seat was ripped and barely taped back together and it was difficult to hold a conversation across the gangway. Our starters were nice, but we were asked if we wanted cutlery, well, yes please. The server returned with our starter cutlery and then almost slung our main course cutlery on the table for us to hand out to each other. I went down to the bar to get napkins. Our main courses were a mix of very good, ok and 1 dish was quite poor. My daughter's sausages did look a bit like cheap chip shop ones and again in hindsight and feeling very bad about this, I wished I had not let her eat them. She was poorly later that night. I cannot 100% say if it was this, but the pieces do unfortunately seem to fit and I have learned my lesson. At any other time I would have absolutely asked to speak to a manager and would have complained or at least shared our experience, but I felt completely and utterly embarrassed with having our friends with us who had come to visit. I did not want to shed more light on our poor experience and I felt responsible. I did walk down to the bar a couple of times to see if there was a manager or someone to speak to, but it just seemed really disjointed with no one obvious in charge. I was also trying to do this discreetly away from the rest of our party. Overall I was just really disappointed and very embarrassed. I'd looked at three venues in total and chose this one as I thought the menu read well and we had previously had some good meals here (although quite a while ago). Local friends had also recommended it and the reviews read well, so I am still very surprised at our experience. I must say that one young lady who served us was so polite, friendly and helpful, but the others werrather abrupt and quite unprofessional, there was a lack of care and attention. Outside was really untidy with weeds and just seemed uncared for. I was planning on returning for 2 birthday celebrations, but have since been to another venue down the road which was a much more positive experience, and I wish we had taken our friends there instead. It is very rare that I leave poor reviews. I love to celebrate our local businesses of all kinds and if I did have a negative experience I would aim to speak or email the venue or business first. I did therefore email the Spotgate the day after our visit to raise these issues as I think feedback is important, which as I said I would always aim to do before leaving a review. However, I have never heard back.

Passing by, had no booking and dropped in on chance. Lady greeted us nice and introduced us to a table in the carriage and also explained menus nicely.. Food was very good quality Staff friendly Service was sound Excellent value. 4 stars for atmosphere as it was a quiet lunch time so not fair to me to judge fully tbh. Nice visit Thank you all

70s/80s music played instead of previous background of train noises in-keeping with surroundings of First Class Pulman Coach. No jacket or boiled potatoes. Asked for dressing free salad ... came with dressing (twice). Steak knife wouldn't even cut my roast potato. Waitress not seen for 35 minutes - no check-back to see if we needed anything for our meal. Ordered dessert, waited 20 minutes, came back as lost our order.

Today 24/5/24 I and my other half went to this charming venue. The staff were pleasant and the food was very nice indeed. I met the Proprietor Jo, a very hard working woman with a passion for her business. I will be back, and my name isn't Arnie 😅

Booked here for my mums 83rd birthday in the carriages, but when we arrived we were told that they hadn't got our booking and that the train couches were full. We were asked if we wanted to eat in the pub area, didn't get an apology, intact the manager just didn't seem bothered at all, very rude indeed. We decided to leave and ended up at the black Lake along the road, what a difference a pub makes, very welcoming, and couldn't do enough for us even though we hadn't booked. Meal was amazing, service was second to none. Think if was fate, wouldn't recommend the spotgate very unwelcoming space, and staff pretty much the same.

What a lovely evening we’ve just experienced in Ursula. It was my son’s 21st and they’d even decorated the room for us with balloons & banners which was a lovely touch and doesn’t happen very often. The food was delicious and we couldn’t fault it. Great choice and some golden oldies on the desert menu to boot. The service was great, the chap was very friendly & attentive. We even got another lovely touch of an after dinner chocolate when the bill arrived. Would highly recommend. Thank you! x

Amazing food, lovely happy and friendly staff but quite a long wait for food between courses. Room was very cold. Had to nip back to the car for cardigans and hoodies.

We arrived a few minutes before the booked time. No one was around 15 minutes later a young woman came and said I will be with you shortly 10 minutes later still waiting when another lady came out and said are you being seen to which of course we hadnt. So she went on her booking system and couldnt find us asked for proof of booking which i supplied and she took us to one of the carriages. The carriages had a lovely 50s atmosphere very impressed. We ordered our drinks which took ages to arrive. Ordered the food which to be fair was failrly quick. Chips were awful very bitty, no taste in the fish, mushy peas in a pot were lukewarm. The sauces were in packets we cudnt open them. Food wasnt the best just about edible. The desserts I had eton mess was very tarty but ok. So we paid the bill got up to leave looked through the window and omg a rat outside. Dont think we will be going again unfortunately sorry but very disappointing

Well waited 10 minutes to served to our table, service was not good due to lack of staff sadly. Starters was nice. My main meal steak and ale pie was hard and burnt at the bottoms they didn't have pineapples for my partner's food but still got charged. Won't be going again night ruined by lack of staff

We had a lovely dinner. My husband had lasagna but the portion size is very small, he was still hungry when he left. Waiting times could be improved, half hour wait or more between courses.

I have visited the pullmans carriages on many occasions but it has been some years since my last visit, we dined in Ursula and I have to say it’s looking grubby.. the net curtains need a wash, the windows were filthy. There were bulbs missing from light shades and cobwebs on the ceilings. On the table was a half hearted attempt at some twinkling lights in a wine bottle that didn’t work! The paper menus handed to us were had greasy finger marks over them, they were crease and just tatty. Just felt like it needed a deep clean. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had food from the 2 course lunch menu £11.95. It was not great below average. The lasagne was dry, burnt and a tiny portion. I suppose you get what you pay for! It’s such a shame we were disappointed as it’s a novel dining environment, we won’t be returning.

I had not been for some time. Booked for dinner with friends for my Birthday. Friendly welcome from the front of house/head waiter. We all ordered different meals, the service was good and food was excellent - all cooked fresh and served piping hot. Couldn't fault anything. Thank you it was "spot" on!

Having not been here for years on my Birthday I decided to take the wife here as it’s just a little bit different. I had of the lunch time specials menu and the wife had of the main menu. ( only difference is the portion size). We sat in one of the old carriages. Very unique. Service was fantastic. People need to realise finding staff for hospitality is near on impossible. ( the team that served us was fantastic). Food, very good value, specials menu especially. Size and freshness spot on. Cheesecake was out of this world!! Would I return, he’ll yeh!! I would defo recommend a cheeky lunch out there.

Called in, an Impromptu visit on the way home, today Sunday. As I'm disabled we asked to sit downstairs. They willingly obliged. We both had a roast dinner. Which was absolutely lovely. The Yorkshire puddings were exceptionally nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. 🙂 We will definitely be going there again. I didn't think to take any photos.

Visited for a club Christmas meal, left very disappointed. Manager was moaning we had all come in our own cars and the car park was full, that was before we had got in there. Garlic mushrooms were hard and the main was bland, hard roasties and turkey was very dry. Desert was the best part of the meal, banoffee pie. Staff were attentive until they had served the mains and then they disappeared. I think they were busy organising their own meals as they were sat down eating when we left. If this is how they treat their customers then you can understand why they're all closing. If you've got a party of 13, surely the food and service should be impeccable🤔. If not, those 13 people go away and mention it to at least 3 or 4 more people and then your reputation has been ruined. 🙄 Beautiful pub though, just needs improvements.

We went as a family (9 of us)for Christmas Day dinner. The food was lovely- plenty of it and well cooked. The staff were very welcoming and happy to help, i.e finding an out of the way place to store a wheelchair for us. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A few more staff would have been a bonus for special occasions such as Christmas, but aside from that it was very good.

We called here today for some lunch and were warmly greeted by both staff and locals alike. Dog friendly pub where our hound was well looked after with water, treats and a cuddle. The food was absolutely delicious with particular praise for the Moo Blue Pie with chips and peas with the whole two meals and drinks coming to a very reasonable £30. Would thoroughly recommend this beautiful establishment and staff. See you again soon we hope.
