The White Rabbit in Brighton and Hove

Can only call it as I see it. A little banter with barman, who found it funny to joke about glassing me when I mistook his accent for the wrong place up north. You can't really joke about glassing your punter.... Can you??

So this might be so completely not understood by UK citizens bc I am I am NOT a UK resident …but damn , I just can’t even begin to understand the ridiculousness of what I experienced after years of enjoying and visiting this cute spot . I mean , I was impressed 8 years ago when their irreverent sense of humor led them to place a tip jar with a little sign on it “the trump assassination, fund” on their bar counter - clearly we were encountering some very twisted if not fun people …sooooooo, there were 20+ very cool beer mats from a company called “Laine Brewery “ which is not a brand we ever heard of . I asked if it would be possible to purchase one . The answer was “‘we are given them from the brewery , we don’t sell them “ . Great , ok , they were free to you from your supplier, who wants you to sell their stuff …who would probably continue to give you stuff to advertise their product completely free , but you won’t take 20 pounds to sell me one - great . So I go back and ask for the brewery person’s contact info so I can try to purchase one directly - I’m given a website - I go on the website and it says I can purchase one for 16 pounds BUT they won’t ship it outside the UK (so ONLY UK addresses will work )- so I go back up to the bar and explain this and again offer the 20 pounds so they can replace the USED one they would sell to me for a brand spanking new one (meanwhile they probably wouldn’t even have to actually pay for one ) …again, bar person refuses - like seriously , you get the item for free and you won’t take money for one !!!! Sorry but I’ve got zero tolerance for stupid !!! Very poor customer service . I am just floored by the nonsense - it’s not like the company doesn’t sell the very same item to anyone in the general public (as long as you have a UK mailing address ). It’s not some exclusive to pubs item - they were just being difficult for no reason at all !!!! Maybe it’s a prejudice against Americans? Dunno but refusing 20 pounds for a 16 pound item is STUPID plain and simple

As a local Brightonian I have been in the pub many times, but this was the first time my partner and I came in for Sunday lunch. The White Rabbit is full of character and the staff are friendly. We ordered roast beef and roast chicken dinners. We were not asked if we had any alleges, but I mentioned that I have a dietary intolerance to leafy greens especial cabbage which gives me violent stomach cramps. After 35mins the food arrived, however my beef turned up with over 1/3 of the plate covered with cabbage, sprouts and red cabbage. I was frustrated as I was hungry and had to return the food. The manager was apologetic and the barman, that originally served me, confirmed my cabbage intolerance had been passed onto the kitchen. The manager even offered to comp my meal which I declined. He did give me a comp glass of cider which was nice. My partner's food was good so I asked him to start. I waited a further 10mins for my beef to arrive -the cabbage etc had been removed but half the plate was now empty. There was one half carrot, one piece of parsnip and two small roast potatoes. I would have hoped that there would have been some extra veg to replace the missing greens? When I checked the meat/meal and it was stone cold! I must admit I was even more frustrated now so I asked the waiter to remove my roast from the bill and decided to not order anything more as my partner was finishing his meal. I felt embarrassed that I had to keep returning the food. The customers on the table next to us started to become verbally abusive saying all I did was moan. which upset my disabled partner. When I asked them the keep their opinions to themselves they then said I had made up my food intolerance and started swearing out load to the whole bar. My partner was now so upset that he stopped eating and drinking so we left. THEN a man followed us out and accused me of being rude to his staff and that I was not welcome back! I told him the staff were nice but the two drunk customers on the table next to us were threatening. Maybe they were off duty staff who knows? The man then back tracked some of his accusations as he realised he was not aware of the whole situation but we felt very alienated, unwelcome and traumatised. This lunch ruined the rest of our day and left a sour taste in our mouths.

Nice place with a good variety of beers. Something for everyone. Nice place to chill out and dodge the crowds walking up and down the street. Staff was super friendly. Would definitely visit again.

The white rabbit is a staple of Brighton finest pubs and places to eat . Not only do they house some excellent bar staff but the kitchen aswell is top industry standard . Would recommend going out of your way for their events and everything is always so well organised and prepared . Wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Vegetarian food was very good the pork belly not so good a bit fatty otherwise a good experience

I recently visited the White Rabbit Pub and had the most amazing roast dinner. The food was absolutely delicious—perfectly cooked meat, crispy potatoes, and rich, flavorful gravy. What really stood out to me, though, was the warm and welcoming staff. From the moment I walked in, they made me feel right at home. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and it was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a great meal. I'll definitely be going back soon!

One of the best roasts in Brighton!

First time here for Sunday Lunch and now can't move as happily stuffed ! Superb Beef, veg and (Huge) homemade Yorkshire Pudding, all cooked to perfection and exceptional value for money as your plate is so stacked.

Amazing decor, staff are so lovely. Both members of staff working today have great knowledge of all the beers on tap. Thanks white rabbit for a lovely experience, I will be back soon ◡̈

Great staff, great beer, and an enjoyable choice of music including The Talking Heads, The Clash, Fleetwood Mac. A chilled place for a couple of Sunday-evening pints.

Quirky looking pub which I thought would be fun.I arranged for a group of 11 people to meet me there on 10/8.We were very well behaved but the group cheered a little celebration I had arranged for them only to be told to ‘tone it down’ by an extremely rude and sour member of staff. Maybe she should have gone outside and dealt with the obnoxious , rude , quieter group .. easier not to? This was an embarrassing situation for me as I chose this pub but certainly won’t be coming back. I guess you don’t want happy people in your pub. Shame.. I organise regular event meetings finishing at pubs/bars around the city.

went yesterday great vibe and friendly staff. ordered a burger which was nice. Also order the beef brisket wasn't the greatest and not cheap. stacked with salad and kimchi. The Meat was 4 thick slices and not shredded. When asked the young lady didn't know much about the menu. Know your products peeps. So not a great dish and wish I had the burger. Expensive lesson

Hands down the best roast in Brighton, no question about it. The new menu is amazing and the pub looks even better after the recent refurb. The staff is lovely as always!

One of the best pubs in Brighton and I love the spruce up it’s been given it was long overdue. Staff are always lovely and the food is great.

First time we went there for drinks, the barman didn’t bother acknowledge us. We ask if there was room on the terrace, and he just told us to have a look ourself, a little bit rude. We came back for a second time because we thought the fish&chips looked good. We shew up at 12:15 and the bar hadn’t opened yet (it supposed to open at 11). Same cold welcoming from the team, we had to order form the bar, which is a bit peculiar when it comes to ordering food. The only nice person was the blond woman who brought us our food - which was excellent 👌🏻 In the end, good food but terrible staff 😅 Luckily they don’t charge for service 😂

What a lovely little place! We ducked in here as it was raining and ended up staying for a few drinks, we would have stayed for the quiz if we didn’t have dinner reservations. The staff are really lovely, drinks are resonably priced too. Will be coming back next time we visit Brighton!

Popped in to try their new menu with a friend as haven’t since they had their refurb. OMG The food is unreal, so good! All the plates we got were delicious! Also the refurb is sick, the front of the bar in particular looks awesome. Service was great as were the drinks and atmosphere! Would make a great date spot too not just hanging out with friends

Overpriced drinks. Bartender with a long ginger beard was extremely rude. Tried to lecture me on the price of drinks in Brighton as someone ‘who is Brighton born and bred’. Came across as patronising and demeaning. Have come to this pub for years, but will not be coming back due to him. Surprising the staff are trained in this manner!

Before reading on - the staff were excellent and friendly as always. However... We live outside of Brighton and always make a point of spending at least one afternoon at The White Rabbit with friends, when visiting. However the new make-over that Laine Brewery have had commissioned is absolutely horrible. It feels more like a wannabe gastropub or up-market coffee shop than a boozer. The work that's been done has completely killed the cosy pub vibe that was there before. The friends we were visiting with, who are locals, said that we are not alone in our dislike of the refurb. We asked a member of staff about it rather neutrally, not wanting to be negative to someone who likely had no say in the works - they politely (but I suspect democratically) mentioned that the designer hadn't completely finished yet. I suggest stopping them from doing any more damage! Also, the food, it must be said, has become extremely expensive. The portions are compensated by being extra large - not manageable unless at least three people are sharing. And we're more heavy-set than average! A look at other tables and the number of chips and 'tots' they were also leaving uneaten suggests we weren't alone in thinking this. It would be much better to have smaller portions at cheaper prices. Sorry to leave a negative review, but it comes from a well-intentioned place!

Beautiful décor inside with lovely staff. We came here for lunch close to them opening they have nice outside options of benches or cute booths. I ordered a small plate of the vegan smoked tofu taco which was the perfect size.

I've had to change my rating because it now looks like a generic wine bar and the atmosphere has been decimated. No longer one of my favourite pubs in Brighton. No idea why the decor was changed. Drinks are still fine and the service good.

From 5 stars to 1. It has gone from being a place with personality and unique decoration to a bland and posh place like the hundreds we find anywhere. Total disappointment.

Yes, a perfect place for coffee and sitting. A clean community, this place belongs exactly there and is worth the rest and well-being.

I came here Yesterday The girl behind the bar didn't really enjoy her service so I asked if there was anyone else to serve me When I did get someone else . The guy who did was great but Unfortunately the prices weren't I ordered for two different types of chicken wings when they come out they were the same type Which obviously annoyed us basically over priced beer and average food and they have had a refurbishment which has made the place lose it's charm

Very sad with the renovation, they've ruined the vibe completely since the renovation

This lovely lanes bar/restaurant has had a complete make over and its gorgeous.

Best vegetarian roast I have ever had! They do a vegan pork belly with crackling and some of the carnivors I went with had the vegan pork instead of the meat its THAT good. Cocktails weren't great but the lager was lovely and it had a nice outdoor area, is doggo friendly and has a nice little Alice in wonderland theme going on decor wise 🐰

Food was delicious. Absolutely miserable staff and terrible service though. All acting like they're above everyone and frowning constantly.

Best roast in brighton hands down! 4 of us attended and had the beef roast with a side of cauliflower cheese and it was incredible. Beef cooked to perfection. All veg delicious and roast potatoes crisp on the outside and fluffy inside.10/10

Didn't have food, music was a bit loud just one speaker Didn't sound good, type of music ok at first,later not. Drink quite expensive, but it is Brighton, and a Saturday night.

Nice staff- good choice of beers. A little pricey but it's Brighton- Good location with outside seating.

Horrible. Rude bartender who insulted my accent (not even in a joke way just plain rude), spent an extortionate price on a pint of guinness that actually made me ill, this place really needs to hold its head in shame. worst boozer ive ever been to. NEVER AGAIN.

Nice pub with good welcome and good food

Had a lovely meal with my family and love the atmosphere of a Laines pub, however after calling in early afternoon to supply my roast preorder, myself and my family were left waiting for 45 minutes for our food. My partner went to the bar to ask if food would be bought out to us and was told we needed to order, we already had but this had not been communicated to the night staff. Again, the food was amazing as always, however because of the miscommunication between the day staff and night staff our food took almost an hour to arrive at the table and no compensation was offered when it came to payment. I love white rabbit and will return for food and drinks, however communication needs to be improved to prevent this from happening again as it meant my family had to dash out of the pub after their last mouthfuls to make their train home which left a bad feeling at the end of the meal. This is a mistake which is easily fixed, which results in a knock on effect on the customers.

Do not come here for a Sunday roast! We was told the wait was 50 minutes, which was ok, so we waited until 1 hour 15 minutes to ask when our order was coming. They said it would be 10 minutes. At 1 hour 40 minutes they came up to our table (was only two of us bear in mind), to tell us they had no idea when our food was coming. So it could have been another 30-60 minutes. That’s over 2 hours for food. We left and had to go somewhere else Awful service.

Although the young lady behind the bar was not very experienced and made a few mistakes she was friendly

Most incredible vegan roast. Best roast I have ever had! The oyster mushroom pork belly was to die for.. crispy roast potatoes and delicious veg and gravy! Only giving a 4 as waited over an hour for food. Never told of any wait time. Shame as the staff were brilliant and super friendly. Also dog friendly a big bonus. Would recommend big time for the food, rest of menu looked amazing!

Great bar with some excellent choices of alcohol away from the mainstream brewery stuff you usually get in pubs. The only thing I would mention is it's not cheap to drink in here but I would still go again as it's a great pub.

Great food, great drinks, just what we needed after a hard day's shopping. Oh and the onion rings were massive!!!

It is bigger on the inside than it appears. A good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the lanes. This has a cool Alice in wonderland theme and plenty of space. Their are some nice benches outside too. This place does film nights and has a lot of community stuff going on. The food was tasty...a tad expensive but enjoyable none the less. They have a taco of the day and some some boozy hot chocolate. A good space if you need somewhere roomy and quiet.

Food tasted strange and was not what we were expecting, the service was a little chaotic inside although the staff were really friendly!

I’m not big on pubs or anything and I’m very picky with my food but the food here is some of the best food I’ve had period. I don’t come to this pub to drink I go for the food. Couldn’t recommend more

Was well early for work and I was so hungry, and I walked past this pub almost every time i go to work so thought I give it a try.... Advice to everyone do visit... Food was banging... Enough said.

Cool pub with a nice outside space both at the front and back. It’s right in the heart of the lanes so had a great vibe. Every time I come to Brighton I stop here.
