The best restaurants serving British food in Hertsmere East of England

The is a locals pub with a friendly atmosphere that extended to visitors like me. A lovely pub setting good food. The house beer "Black Horse" was served to perfection

The food was delicious and the service was impeccable. The staff were so kind when our daughter dropped her hot chocolate - they gave us another one for free and made sure it was cool enough for her to drink. Thank you. We loved the outdoor seating area. So cosy.

Had a takeaway order of haddock goujons and gefilte fish balls for a family of six. There was enough for two meals. All have gone with no waste. Excellent.

Quiet, airy cafe with delightful staff and a wonderful outlook onto a field. The has brown bites were beyond superb and dare I say worthy of a detour. Peaceful place, lots of room, a great antidote to a dog walk and children’s play area just a short walk away. Plenty of parking too it’s an ideal rendezvous point. Coffee well made.

We hired the smaller private room for a family tea to celebrate a special birthday. There were 15 of us, grandparents, parents and children. From the start of our relationship with Mabel's administrator, Martine, discussions flowed easily - price, one glutenfree guest, one vegetarian, lots of details - nothing was too much trouble. On the day there was plenty to eat - sandwiches, scones, cakes and a drinks bar with prosecco. Sara, our waitress, was a star, making sure everyone had everything we wanted including extra cups of tea or coffee. Everyone enjoyed the relaxing informal event. The room was full of Victoriana and the children loved the experience and also the opportunity to explore the garden (with adult supervision). Our family tea at Mabel's was everything we wanted for our special day. Huge thanks to Martine and Sara for all their beautiful hospitality and care.

the most expensive item on the menu was sirloin steak £15. I do not believe any other item on the menu exceeded £ 10 and its a big choice menu. the service was quick and attentive. the food was well displayed on the plates . the restaurant/cafe was clean and neat. a good place to go to eat.

Not as good as Bushey, service was fine, atmosphere is also ok, food was dry, beans tasted like they had been reheated, for the price at over forty quid for a couple of kids meals and an egg on toast I'd much rather spend more on the same named site in Bushey. Maybe it's the cost of goods etc. but as soon as standards start to slip, it doesn't take long before you either need to up your game or realise the game might be coming to an end! Service was great though!

We were staying with friends in Bushey and decided to go to the Horse & Chains for New Year's Eve Party Night. What a brilliant evening it was with a proper good old pub atmosphere. They had a singer called Andy on that night who covered all eras and really got the place going and in a party mood. If you are local the Horse & Chains would definitely be a good place to go to. It's such a shame we live over 100 miles away.

A great place to eat, just 3 mins from South Mims services. Plenty of parking. Staff were welcoming and plenty of seating available. Menu choices were good and service was quick. Food was excellent and portion size good. The only negative thing . Was the bill was not accurate. Overall a very pleasant experience.
