Visited here as we just wanted a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Other establishments were shut or only served fish and chips! I try and be fair when leaving reviews and unfortunately this did not “hit the mark”. The waitress didn’t seem interested in her job with no welcome as we walked through the door. No table service and menus were poorly presented on the bare wooden tables. Tea was ok but both the cakes we had were pretty average. The cafe gave the impression that it was unloved and needed a lot of TLC. We won’t be back.

The smell of cooking oil just hits you when you open the door. Not an encouraging sign. Mediocre coffee and cakes. Seats dated and uncomfortable. Whole place looks untidy and unkempt Asked lady who was serving where the toilets were. Was directed round to the back of the building to a filthy muddy courtyard only to find there was a handwritten sign on the door saying toilet was closed. Thank goodness there are lovely public toilets just round the corner. What a shame that this seems to be the only cafe Rothbury has on what used to be a lovely Main Street but sadly like so many other towns is showing signs of decline. Will take a picnic and a flask the next time we visit Rothbury!

Visited this cafe 10 Nov 2024 2pm. We were on a coach trip travelling back to Leeds so looking for sandwiches to take on coach. Very little choice. Ordered two tuna and one coronation chicken sandwich and charged £25.50. This was the only cafe open on the island selling food that day so no choice but to pay. Alternative was a dried up sausage roll for £4. Staff attitude, take it or leave it, I didn’t set the prices.

We came for a quick lunch and ordered a sandwich and a salad. After paying for this we were told there was no forks for the salad and there was nothing they could do. If we had know this we wouldn’t have ordered. The staff were very dismissive of the problem, offering no help or solution. Shocking from the manager on shift

Terrible experience here , I had attended a relatives wedding that I had traveled 200 miles for and was greeted at the bar by rude staff that seemed to not want to serve anyone and put a downer on the evening , my food was also not given as they had “ran out” even though I had ordered and payed for my meal weeks in advance but this was not clear to the catering company Would not reccomend this venue!

I don't usually write reviews, but I didn't feel as though I could allow anyone else in this hotel without warning. I have travelled and slummed it during my youth, but this was just not acceptable as a hotel for a stay with me and my 7 and 9 year old girls. As a hostel perhaps, and a dirty one at that. We stayed in room 33 and arrived 28th Dec 2024. The room was smelly, but I thought it was an old building and perhaps the damp was from the bathroom being recently cleaned. Cleaning is not on the agenda here though! We had a big black hair in the sink, cobwebs in the corners and there was a used mini milk sachets and water still in the kettle from the previous guest. There were botched jobs of paint work all round the room too, to which my kids said "that looks awful". I had brought my two girls away for an adventure by the sea and they said that they "didn't feel safe" when it came to night time. The FREE PARKING is just the parking on the street too, which is first come first serve so can be tight at busier times of the year. No idea who the chap was who checked us in, but he left our bags in the hall on full view from 12.30 until 3pm when the room was "ready". The bags could have easily been stolen and he didn't even take my name or ID. The restaurant never opens and there is no breakfast or coffee etc!! It's functioning as a hostel. We used the Hope and Anchor in case you are reading this it is already too late. The smell subsided on night one and we were out all of the next day, but when we came back we found two guests who had tried to book in with their family over the new year. They refused to go in their room due to bed bugs that they had seen and documented. My girls were horrified for a second time!! We then went up to our room which then stunk even more intensely, like eggs and sewage. The chap offered to change rooms, but I said I was worried about what we might find in another room and that after a whole day out the kids just wanted to rest. He was keen to get me to agree that "I was happy with the room I had". He then offered some room spray to help with the smell! I paid £176 for two nights and I would rather have slept on the beach. The chap was kind and friendly enough and I feel sorry for them because they clearly don't have the funding to spend on the place, but it really shouldn't be open for business at all. When we checked out there was no one there. I had to call the landline from my mobile each time I needed something and during the last morning he answered the call from his car! If you are also looking for ghosts, but could put up with dirty rooms then don't expect any of those either. It's all a myth and the locals will advise the same. It's just absolutely freezing and dark and creepy that's all. I'm just praying that Booking.com will issue a refund. The location, must add, is great. Here's hoping it gets bought out sometimes soon!
