We had the house burger and venison casserole. They weren’t great. Both lacking in flavour. I’d had the casserole and could not taste the venison. The taste was overpowered by the salty stock. Disappointed.

We had the absolute pleasure of attending a winter wedding at The Lancrigg, and we cannot recommend this venue enough! The setting is simply stunning, the staff were exceptionally attentive and professional, and the food was nothing short of delicious. This is truly a first-class venue for a Lake District wedding. On top of that, we had an extraordinary experience with the team at Thorney How accommodation. My partner accidentally left behind a bracelet of immense sentimental value. Mark, the owner, went above and beyond to assist us. He quickly liaised with Debbie from the contract cleaning company, who was incredibly understanding and cooperative. Together, they even reached out to the new guests staying in our room. Thanks to their swift efforts, the bracelet was found under the bed and safely returned to us. We are beyond grateful for their kindness, professionalism, and dedication. It’s rare to encounter such thoughtful service, and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you for making our experience truly unforgettable!

Sitting out in the beer garden was an absolute highlight of our trip to the Lakes in August 2023!

Very tired and in need of complete renovation and it shouldnt have been advertised as a four star hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful working under poor conditions. Breakfast choice poor unless you like eggs and the vegetarian full English was dry and obviously been kept under a heat lamp. Definitely not 4 star and I understand the day after we left the hotel was closed for renovation.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this hotel! We visited for 3 nights in November for my husbands 40th birthday with our small dog, and had the most fantastic stay! We love to travel and both agreed this was probably the best hotel we've ever stayed in. If you want a beautifully decorated, cosy, relaxed hotel in an excellent location, with outstanding food and the most wonderful staff who make you (and your dog) feel completely at home, this is the place for you! Location - perfectly located in gorgeous Ambleside. So many beautiful walks on your doorstep and a short walk from the little town with tonnes of charm and lovely pubs and shops. There’s also a ferry from Ambleside which takes you around Windermere lake! The hotel / room - we were in a ground floor, dog friendly pavillion room in the new extension and it was stunning! Spacious, beautifully decorated, double sinks, huge bath and seperate shower, large seating area and incredibly comfortable beds. Our room also had an enclosed outdoor seating area with a gate to the garden for ease when taking our dog out in the mornings. Everything in the room was so well thought out. I loved the complementary snacks and cocktails in the fridge (and loved that proper cocktail glasses were also provided). The lounge areas in the hotel with roaring fires and comfortable, relaxed seating are the perfect place to enjoy a pre dinner cocktail. Breakfast and Dinner - Dinner was outstanding! We ate at the restaurant three nights in a row and everything we tried was as perfectly presented as it was delicious! We loved it all and thought it was as good as any Michelin star restaurant we’ve visited. Breakfast was also extremely good, with a great choice of traditional cold and hot offerings. The staff are also exceptional! Dog friendly - Having been here, I can say this is truely a dog friendly hotel (compared to most other hotels, which in comparison seem merely dog tollerant). Our dog was made to feel as welcome as we were by the staff. Bed, water bowl, towel and treats waiting in the room. At breakfast and dinner, a blanket and water bowl were laid out next to our table before we sat down and our dog was offered a sausage every morning at breakfast! We were able to dine with our dog for every meal, in a dog friendly dining room just adjoining the main dining room which was perfect. And finally, the dog shower in the boot room with dog shampoo, towels and dressing gowns made light work of muddy paws after a day exploring the lakes. Just brilliant!

Such a shame to be writing this review as this pub could be a classic Lake District country pub. Unfortunately the food is terrible! The chicken burger was full of what I presume was gristle but could have been bits of bone, undercooked and pink inside. Completely inedible. The lamb Henry was all fat and inedible too. Will never visit again and recommend you go elsewhere.

We visited here for lunch. It was dog friendly which was great. Restaurant area wasn't to busy. The bar was busier. Staff were, well, not ask friendly as it should be. You could hear the staff telling customers there was a long wait for food and they had run out of a lot of drinks and beers, which is a pretty poor show really. We ordered the hot beef sandwich and chips. It cost £11.50. Food arrived and it was a sourdough bun with 2 slices of beef, some seriously runny gravy which was more like water and a small serving of chips. The chips were actually quite nice. The beef was ok, but you didn't get much of it, and it was literally 2 slices on a bun, nothing else! It was expensive for what you got, and we both didn't feels so great after eating it. Not somewhere i will want to eat at again.

I really wanted to be more impressed... but I just wasn't. Perfect location for walkers and a potentially cool vibe but don't be fooled by instagram! It was cold and lacked atmosphere- not ideal as 90% of customers were walkers. I was disappointed to know the Langdale gin was currently made in Essex, and food was average. We had two plates of loaded fries and while the toppings had a nice flavour and were warm, the chips underneath were stone cold. We'd had quite a wait which I didn't mind, but by this point we were too hungry to send it back. I might have mentioned it to a friendly waited if there was one to be seen, however no one checked in and it really felt the staff were happy to do the bare minimum. One guy lit a few candles and sat and had a pint on this side of the bar with some mates. I'd love to return in the hope it's better as it really feels it has so much potential.

Very disappointed with the staff. Unsmiling and disengaged. For example, there were no serviettes or forks and when we asked the staff, they placed a pack of unopened serviettes on the shelf next to the bar, and some forks into the tray, without making eye contact or saying anything at all. In response to my Google review the owner dismissed my feedback by telling me that the staff were not rude without asking about why we were disappointed.

This is our second stay at the Traveller's rest in Grassmere and it was as amazing as the first visit. The venue is run by Laci and his wife Alex. Laci was attentive when we arrived quickly getting us checked in and informing us of the times for breakfast etc. He kindly carried my bags up to our room. The lovely young lady (sorry didn't catch your name) who served our breakfast on both mornings was incredibly friendly, offering advice on hikes in the area. When I mentioned I was cold one of the nights she went out of her way to source me a heater. It was my fault for not realising the window has been left open all night! The food at dinner and breakfast is delicious, good traditional home cooked meals that left us feeling suitably stuffed. I'd forgotten to book dinner one of the nights and when we arrived back late afternoon to check if they could squeeze us in, Laci had already reserved us a table for the same time as the night before in case we needed it. All of the staff were super friendly and attentive. The rooms are comfortable and the shower absolute bliss after a cold and long hike. The location is perfect for exploring. HIGHLY recommend. We will be back!

Nice day in Ambleside, we were looking for a nice pub for lunch. Saw this pub with board saying ‘beer garden at the rear’. So we walked through the quiet pub, down some fire escape steps, past some bins then found the ‘beer garden’…… No kind of beer garden I’ve ever been in, couple of tables, fake grass, rubbish bins, beer barrels, ash trays (overflowing). My wife had gone the bar on way in, the wonderfully helpful barms said “I’m not doing food outside”. Grumpy as Mr Grumpy. Frankly I wouldn’t have had food sat in the ‘beer garden’. Shambles!

Headed in as a group of 9 as other cafes weren't big enough to accommodate (absolutely fine), and we're seated quickly. Everyone had coffee or tea and a scone. Scones were a good size and delicious. Service from the guy with long hair was fantastic.
