Read about this place in MCN so stopped off when in the area for lunch on a Monday. Unfortunately it failed to live up to reports. Food expensive for what it is, not great quality and slow to arrive despite there only being a dozen people in the cafe. Staff just about managed to talk to customers. Probably better when more bikers about but otherwise I wouldn't bother going back. Should be interesting when the new Caffine and Machine on the other side of the road opens later in the month and provides some competition.

December 23rd visited refectory for lunch with a friend. Winchester was heaving with people, we thought the Refectory would be a good place to eat. On arrival we were quite surprised to see it not busy, great we thought. Tables needed clearing we noted first. What a huge disappointment. My friend chose a hot macaroni & broccoli lunch & bubbling just out of the oven. This was served up with a square type chip scoop with holes in the bottom absolutely caked up with previous cold congeal food which had served out this special for several hours. Asking the female assistant if she had a clean scoop or a serving spoon she replied that's all we've have got! Health & hygiene did not seem to be observed with the sauce running everywhere. I refrained from having this mashed up how she served it with this incorrect congealed food scoop. Final disappointment was the ladies toilets of two had one with a broken lock which would not close & lock or state out of order, you had to use it with the risk of someone opening the door whilst you you were using it. Washing hands was another issue as I could not see a dryer, I later discovered it was in the tap system, how was a customer to know. Making complaints to the manager she seemed not to care. How sad this refectory is visited by numerous visitors from all over the world. I grew up in the centre of Winchester, always proud of my ancestry & our iconic well loved Cathedral to find this truly disappointing set up. Although no longer I guess, by my receipt run by the Cathedral it certainly needs a shake up to continue. I feel the Cathedral dignitry & those concerned should be aware of this issue of the Refectory as it is, very sad.
