It was not ok but not amazing and won’t rush back. Noodles were fine but not as tasty as others I’ve had. Tried 4 different sushis and the rice felt like it was overcooked and chewy, the fillings didn’t taste like they were freshly prepared, it was as if they had sat a while because the tempura king prawn was tough and had a bit soggy. The siracha mayo wasn’t the nicest and there was one with iceberg lettuce in it which wasn’t described and it wasn’t pleasant. Wanted to love it but was a bit disappointing.

I first reviewed Koku Shi in September 2019 and gave it four stars, and we returned several times over the next few years (Covid permitting). Our most recent visit with our son was a great disappointment: not only had the prices risen a lot (not unusual in a restaurant over five years) but the quality had declined considerably. The nigiri tuna was thin and pale and the rice it sat on was almost as bad as supermarket sushi, the katsu sauce was thin and lacking in flavour. The sweet potato and ebi tempura were both especially disappointing: the contents of the former were very thin sweet potato batons with almost no texture and the contents of the latter were the skinniest prawns I have ever come across. The batter on both was way too thick and greasy. I lived in Tokyo for six years so I know my Japanese food, but was still favourably impressed by the 2019 incarnation of Koku Shi. The best that I can say about the current incarnation is that the boiled rice was quite good. We will probably not be back.
