Oak Tree in Bromsgrove

Stopped here for some late lunch after a long walk up the Lickey hills. The lady serving behind the bar who I assume was the manageress was friendly and welcoming. We sat in a booth with a little TV in (nice touch) and had the southern fried ultimate burger and the cowboy burger. Both 10/10, hot and fresh and said we would definitely return one day for a pint and a game of pool. Thank you :)

Living in Birmingham for many years I’ve been meaning to go to this place, essentially at the gateway to the Lickey Hills Country Park, for a long time but what with one thing and another had never got around to it. But last Monday, the day before New Year’s Eve, we’d been to the park in the morning, felt like lunch out rather than at home, and this seemed like the ideal opportunity. We arrived at 1pm, and considering it was lunchtime it was quite quiet — good, we thought, since that should have meant a minimal wait. My order was for a medium sirloin steak, with the rest of us ordering hunter’s chicken and fish bites and chips. Time passed. And passed. The pub started filling up, and time continued to pass. 45 minutes after placing our order I decided to go to the bar to see where our food was — not least because we’d almost finished our drinks. The barmaid went into the kitchen, and then came out with our food and took it to the table; after placing it down I asked if we might have some complementary drinks to eat with our food, since we’d just about (after getting through them as slowly as we could) finished the ones we’d bought on ordering. She said she’d have to speak to her manager, and went; whilst she said she was sorry for the wait, I didn’t get much of a sense of genuine regret from it, more that she knows that what you’re supposed to do in that situation is say sorry for the wait. It was then when I started eating my food that I gained an insight into perhaps why it had taken 45 minutes to cook, for my ‘medium’ steak was very much beyond medium, it was indeed far beyond what the steak levels of doneness meme has as ‘order the chicken you steak-hating b-yard’. It’s also a good job there was a proper steak knife because it was so tough to cut — and to chew — that I might have needed a power saw to cut it. I believe there were some mushrooms, though the brown spheres on the plate which I suspected of being mushrooms could have been more or less anything. And the chips had something of a background taste and odour of barbecue sauce about them, which was especially annoying because I really don’t like barbecue sauce. Fortunately for my co-diners their food they declared as being yeahwa’evs average. All the while I was getting my jaw exercise eating the steak I was thinking another glass of wine might have made it easier to go down; eventually after 20 minutes just as we were finishing our food those free drinks to make up for the 45 minute wait I asked for eventually arrived, which on the one hand, at least they eventually arrived, but on the other hand it did mean we ended up staying longer still than expected to drink them. When I was standing at the bar asking where my food was, the two people stood behind me said ‘oh dear, that doesn’t bode well, we’ve only just arrived’; as we were leaving I went over to their table and said ‘pro tip, if you’re going to ask for a free drink ask for it at half an hour if you want to stand a chance of it coming whilst you’ve still got food to eat’. ‘Oh dear, it looks like we’ve been waiting 35 minutes’, they replied, just as their food arrived. I’m not going to speculate on the extent to which the people running and staffing this pub care about the experience they give customers for whom it will be the first, and perhaps only, pub they see on arriving at and leaving the park. I’m also not going to speculate on the staffing level, since there were three people serving at the bar on that quiet lunchtime. I expect food in a restaurant to take a little while to come, and indeed in a gastropub. I think the only other times my food has taken over 45 minutes to come has been the occasions I’ve eaten in Persian restaurants, because the nature of the food is that it takes a long time to cook. Whilst I’d expect a little bit of a wait at lunchtime, as I said, it really was not busy when we arrived, though it was getting busy as we left. It certainly does not take 45 minutes to cook a medium steak and chips, and frankly I suspect the hunter’s chicken was probably to a high degree pre-part-cooked rather than having been butchered there in the kitchen on order. Whilst I’m not going to deny I’m the sort of person who’ll never miss an opportunity to try to get a free drink, this is not free for the sake of trying to blag a freebie — any reasonable person expects to pace themself with their drink when they go to a pub for lunch if they’re not expecting to stay for a sesh, half the drink whilst waiting, half with their food. I think the request for a free drink both in recompense for the wait and to have a drink to eat with the food is a perfectly reasonable one, not a Karen move, so it was adding insult to injury that it didn’t come until we’d nearly finished our food. In short, don’t go there to eat; if you’ve spent a morning or afternoon in the park and want to eat out straight afterwards, get Google Maps out and find a nearby alternative.

Worst meal in terms of value ever.Cheap fries supposed to be loaded bit of Barbecue Sauce and cheese was processed which cover only a handful of chips.Better value in local chippie.Chicken pieces amounted to 6 or 7 from Iceland I guess No shocking value did give comments to waitress who just smiled and walked off

An excellent meal from the festive menu. Lovely freshly made tomato soup, followed by a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and a nice dessert. From the off, we were made very welcome (we had already reserved our table in October). Our host was Sophie and she greeted us with a smile taking us directly to our table. Every where was clean and well presented and the waiting staff couldn't do enough for us, nothing was too much trouble. Although I chose the tomato soup as my starter my wife had the pate, which was equally just as tasty and enjoyable. The main had a variety of vegetables, succulent turkey (not over cooked & dry) and the biggest Yorkshire pud (lovely & crispy). I had ice cream for dessert but the missus had christmas pudding with custard, which she couldn't fault. Since this pub has changed hands it has improved a lot. The service, the food the decor. If you are in the area and you fancy some nice pub grub and a pint give the Oak Tree a go. Thank you again Sophie for being a great host.

Arrived early and table was ready and a great view too food was amazing just enough on the plates staff where so helpful asking if we wanted anything else can not fault it at all definitely will book up for next year thanks for a lovely meal and day

Went here with friends for the 2 course Xmas menu. Staff were polite & service was good. The Xmas dinner was warm, tasteless & the gravy was like water! Not enjoyable at all!

No heating on, ate our meals with our coats on , food quality was poor . The staff were run of their feet as there didn't seem to be adequate staff working. We won't be going back

Got there early afternoon. There were plenty of seats. Food took a while to arrive, but it was good. I had Chicken pie, chips and peas. The crust was slightly on the hard side, but the pie was definitely edible. The woman that served the food was pleasant. Nice atmosphere, I would recommend.

Desperately needs refurb and new menu. Every single item on menu is with chips. Not a potato or vegetable in sight. Shame, used to be great, but gone really down hill over last couple years. Revisited for Sunday lunch. Pleasantly surprised. Very nice, just 2 pointers, food wasn’t very hot, maybe left under lamps for a while, gravy very thin and runny, with little taste. Will definitely visit again, but thick gravy please, and food nice & hot. 😜

Well I had the Ultimate Spicy burger and it had all the things I like! Including a spicy maple sauce. My nephew enjoyed his mac'n'cheese with pulled bbq pork. The service was really good considering I only saw three staff serving. They were great when changing my dads steak. Well done Stacey, Alisha and Mia. I think Marstons have a winning trio.

Effortless booking system, all was ready for a large party of people when we arrived, delicious food was presented promptly and great value in a welcoming and laid back atmosphere. Plenty of on site parking available.

Lovely few hours here. It was quite busy but the staff were still very personable and chatty. Popped back today for a drink, same lovely welcome. Hats off to Alisha, Stacey and Emily... keep doing what you're doing ladies.

Positive - Staff lovely , helpful and friendly . Steak was done to perfection. Negative - Low score due to , mushrooms were black and shrivelled up . There was no grilled tomato with the steak and just a half of a normal tomato and the chips were well over done and crunchy . Not enough staff at all behind the bar . The lady was run off her feet and at one point there were 9 people around the bar waiting .

We walked to the bar through a cloud of vape smoke which set the tone for the rest of our meal we had a long wait at the bar to be served due to there only being 2 staff serving. When the food arrived both of our chips were covered in black bits when we asked about it we were told it was pepper when we questioned this the staff came back to tell us the fryer needed the oil changing and was going to be done on Saturday. I had the spicy burger which the dipping sauce was missing of the plate on eating the burger I realised that the crispy bacon and hot maple sauce was also missing off the burger all in all a really disappointing meal wont be returning anytime soon

Ate here tonight first thing was the amount of people vaping inside the bar long wait at the bar due to only being 2 staff serving the meal was really disappointing the chips were covered in black bits which we were told was pepper when we said it looked like the fryer was dirty we were then told this was the reason and the oil was going to be changed on the Saturday my missus had the hunters chicken which she said was ok I had the spicy beef burger the dipping sauce was missing off my plate the burger was also missing the crispy bacon and hot maple sauce but couldn't be bothered to flag it up as just wanted to leave wont be returning in a hurry

Had the turkey Sunday roast which was delicious. It was all hot when served. The staff were friendly and although busy we're still polite and professional

11 of us went for dinner on Sunday 13th Oct food was so nice waitresses were polite and we had one issue but it was resolved straight away Stacey bing Mia Emily were fantastic thank you all

After a change if management the food has improved , last time we had Sunday lunch there it was awful , well done on the improvement

Need to pop the heating on, bloody cold. Marston’s pub but not one real ale was on! The Malbec was nearly £10 a glass. The staff however were very VERY friendly and a credit to the pub.

We was a little disappointed with the fact they had no garlic for the dough balls but they supplied us with butter and cheese and they was lovely, the staff was fantastic too, very friendly and courteous, the rest of the meals all burger meals was cooked to perfection 9/10 for the food but 10/10 for the staff, the 3 ladies (Stacey, Alisha and Emily) was brilliant, we will definitely be back

It was a pleasant dinner following a long nature walk. The restaurant is located right next to Lickey Hills Park and has a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, the staff was so friendly and welcoming, especially Eli! thank you!

I had the mixed grill. The chicken with it, was very very dry. Other than that, it was good. Service was quick and server was polite and attentive. Everyone else's meal was good. I was the only one with mixed grill. If you like a John Smiths or Worthington type beer. They don't do it. Good choice of lagers and real ales, if that is your preference.

Starting with the food, it was pretty good, albeit missing items mentioned on menu. The food took a while to come out at what appeared to be a quiet time. When the mains came out there was quite a delay from first meal to last meal being served A large group from a football team arrived and it became very noisy. Staff did their job but lacked customer service skills, no mention of food delays when ordering or apologising for time it took to get it.

Good food, helpful and polite staff, Sally and Toyah made our evening. Nothing was too much trouble.
