The Black Horse in Kingston upon Thames

Sadly if you have booked the Christmas meal you'll be very disappointed. Starters Every bruschetta starter was soggy obviously left on the side waiting for other starters to go out or preprepared. The mushroom topping one was served luke warm. Ate it as hungry Mains The pork was disgusting. The skin was was like tough leather with absolutely no crisp. The mash lumpy and the Brussels broke rules that even al dente would question and cold. Everyone who ordered it left 80% of the food on their plates and only 2 people out of 12 chose to eat it. Turkey was OK and veg but potatoes didn't seem freshly roasted Veggie option served in oily pastry filled with squash. Looked unappealing and was uneaten Deserts Sticky toffee pudding was nice and cheese board which obviously didn't need cooking!! Serving staff very pleasant If you have booked for christmas menu I suggest you cancel it none of our party enjoyed it and will never go back for food which is a shame as its local to our office. Most main dish plates had over 70% of the food sent back uneaten

Recently the Black Horse has seen a huge glow-up. It's friendly, there are things going on, the prices are reasonable and the vibes are great.

The Black Horse Pub is an absolute gem! From the moment you step in, you’re greeted with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about what they do. The food is fantastic—fresh, flavorful, and with a great variety to suit all tastes. The pub itself has a cozy charm, with plenty of seating and a spacious beer garden that’s perfect for sunny days. They also have a great selection of drinks, including some excellent local ales. Whether you’re popping in for a quick pint, enjoying a meal with friends, or attending one of their events, the Black Horse always delivers. Highly recommend it to anyone in the Kingston area!

Honestly, I used to always drive past this pub! But I thought I'd stop judging. So decided to come In. Met with Jake, started speaking to him lovely bloke. Then asked about food, spoke to Jack he explained he is thinking about trying new things. I said hot? He then made me some fresh homemade hot strips! Banging! Honestly lovely place, food is cooked well, place is clean. Would recommend!

I want to give a huge shout-out to Jake the supervisor at The black horse. Every time I visit, their welcoming spirit and attention to detail create an amazing atmosphere that keeps me coming back. Their dedication to excellent service, combined with a warm and friendly approach, truly sets the black horse apart. Cheers to Jake for making every visit memorable and enjoyable!

We went to the open mic night on Tuesday evening, staff are always friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere was a vibe thanks to the new supervisor Jake. We have been waiting for our favourite local pub to get back on track and it seems like it’s happening. We are excited to see what the black horse has in store for us. Had an amazing Sunday lunch at The Black Horse Pub! The roast beef was absolutely delicious perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor. The portions were generous, and the sides were just as impressive. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made the experience even better. This is definitely the best place in Kingston for a proper Sunday roast. Can’t wait to come back

We went in for a bite and were surprised by the variety on the menu. The pie and mash was nice but the Mrs didn’t care for the ragu. My wife who is from South America thought chorizo meant spiced sausage in every country. Apparently not. The beef and onion pie were tasty and fresh. The apple crumble was also a nice finish to a typical pub grub evening.

After a busy weekend and on the Bank Holiday Monday, the beer was v low in selection. Not great.

I have visited here a couple of times since being under new management with some friends after work in the week. The 25% off drinks 5-7pm is a very good deal, however there never seems to be enough staff on and the wait for a drink is ridiculous. I stood at the bar for 5 minutes whilst a member of staff was making another customers coffee, he could see I was there yet he did not acknowledge me. It doesn't take a second to say something like "i'll be with you in a moment" Surely that's just common courtesy. With such few staff on, empty glasses were stacking up on tables and the bar staff having to eat their dinner at the bar which isn't very professional and I felt like i was inconveniencing them when they had to finish their mouthful to serve me. It is such a lovely looking pub with great decor and beer garden, but with the lack of basic politeness and customer service properly drags the place down and i wouldn't be surprised if they close indefinitely soon.

Had to give one star as it won't let you post without one! WHAT A DREADFUL EXPERIENCE! Booked a table for 5 for a birthday celebration. No welcome on arrival, empty bar and restaurant. Went to the bar, waited ages to be acknowledged. (Being ignored, the place was empty!) Finally, explained we had booked and told dismissively 'yeah, you can go and sit anywhere' (as I said, the place was empty) Chose a table, no menus on table or offered.. Nobody looking after tables or acknowledging us. Went back to the bar to ask for menus. Meanwhile, during our several unnecessary trips to the bar, the girl behind the bar was continuously swearing ( f word and sh*t). Disgusting. We were not impressed as we had a 10 year old child with us. My child asked if they were showing the football (as they always used to) was told abruptly 'no'. After hanging about awkwardly and not getting any acknowledgement, we left. This is the second time we have been here since it's changed management (we thought we'd give it a second chance) and it's diabolical. Last time, the staff were also rude, continually swearing and unfriendly- acting like they were working under duress. Please bring back the lovely previous management who where in charge at Christmas time and sadly got moved on. The two guys were so professional and welcoming. Felt so awkward and unwelcome today - almost like they do not want any customers! The staff need to be sent on some 'how to work in hospitality' courses. Left the empty and unwelcoming Black Horse and went over the road to The Norbiton which was absolutely delightful! Heaving, welcoming, full of happy people! Complete opposite. The Black Horse will not survive as it is being run now. Dreadful. It's a shame as it used to be a nice place! We don't want to see local pubs closed because of rubbish management but won't be returning while this lot are here.

Pub has been completely transformed from a few years ago. Really lovely inside, nice outside area. Decent prices and variety of drinks and food. Highly recommended. Really good vibe in there.

Visited the pub recently and had mixed feelings about the experience. The food was decent; I had the burger, which was good but seemed overpriced for what you get. Since I only tried the burger, I can't comment on other menu options. The drinks were good though. The pub was unusually quiet for a Friday night, but this turned out to be a okay as we were watching one of the Euros matches. However, a major downside was the 'mandatory' service charge for table service, which was not mentioned on the menu. The said it couldn’t be taken off the bill when I questioned it. This charge was simply for bringing the food to the table, which felt like a sneaky way to get more money from customers. Overall, I don't recommend this place as there are better options nearby, maybe for a drink only.

Unless you have a lot of time to spare, don't bother ordering food. If you're taking an order - pub staff - let the punters know if there's going to be a delay. No one else seemed to be eating at 830pm when I arrived, coming up to an hour now for a burger to be produced. Oh, and when it came, despite the person taking the order asking about allergens, that didn't seem to matter, allergens were dished up. Avoid.

Over the years this pub has been up and down. It’s gone from being a bit of a family friendly chain to now quite tired and disorganised. Don’t get me wrong it felt generic but now it’s gone very tango uniform. The only good thing going for it is the outside space and even that feels unloved. A decrepit old Camden Hells shed on the front garden and some tired benches sets the scene. It was fairly empty for an England game, yet the bar was chaos with no handle on who was next or how to pour a decent drink. One Asian chap who didn’t seem to know what was on the spirit shelf and another older chap, neither of whom had any idea who was next to be served. Quite the common staple in hospitality one would argue. Before here The Norbiton offered a pint of Steigel and a bottle of Coke for £9.50. Afterwards the Park Tavern offered a pint of Heineken, Baileys and pack of poppadoms for £12.90. However, Black Horse said it was 10% off drinks during games and a pint of Moretti, Baileys and apple and raspberry soft drink came to £20.50! The Moretti was supposedly the Sale do Mare version - Moretti is average at best and this version wasn’t any better. Clearly just a big brewery marketing cash grab to charge more for an average product. It was so chaotic where you couldn’t even argue the toss in terms of the price. In short you could save nearly £8-10 for two or three items anywhere else nearby so just do that. That quickly adds up in this day and age. Other punters were baffled at the drinks prices too as they kept changing. Some chap at the bar also had waited forever and said one round did two drinks was circa £10 and the previous one was £18ish. What a mess! I hate to slate a pub, but they’re on the scam here compared with everywhere else in the area. There’s little other explanation for all these random prices and the disorganisation is unforgivable. The recent reviews give little detail about this place and seem desperate. One smells a rat that’s all I can say. Happy to give feedback on my visit if anyone fancies contacting me unlike the dodgy generic reviews of late. It’s probably the worst incarnation of this pub I’ve seen and I hope someone else can sort it out 🙏🏻. £20.50 for that round indeed! Even if it was a mistake there’s no excuse as people who don’t know what they’re doing shouldn’t be working in the first place. Time for a change and hopefully the Black Horse can get back to its average best rather than this shambolic incarnation.

Wonderful pub. Had the Eton mess and cookie dough along with a couple of drinks- absolutely would reccomend the Eton mess.

Big fan of this pub! The staff are AMAZING. So friendly and love a doggo 🐶 the food is decent enough however on Sunday they do a lamb roast that will knock your socks off 😋🍖 just stop putting cheese on the fish pasta please 🤣🍝 definitely recommend 💪

We have made 2 attempts to eat in the black horse in the last 6 months. Firstly we visited on a Sunday to be told you had to book for a roast in advance. We visited again on a Saturday, there was one party of 8, another table of two and our table of two. The pub was empty apart from these three tables. We ordered some food but were told it would take 50 minutes, when asked why it would take so long when the pub was empty the staff member said there was a big party in (8 people?!) and that they had too many online orders. The pub is now running a takeaway(Sin City) from the pub which means there is a stream of takeaway drivers coming in and out to deliver burgers and they are therefore unable to meet the expectations of customers who are actually in the pub. A real shame as we have always loved this pub but now won’t be giving it a third attempt. Hopefully it will be taken over by someone who can make it work just as a pub and not as a takeaway place.

Gave this pub another go and it's back to being one of the best pubs in kingston. 5 stars all round again

The black horse is a good local pub. The food is a little hit and miss at times. I can recommend the chips with pork belly but would avoid the cheesy garlic bread and pizza as they are very dry. The service is quick for the most part and very friendly.

Stunning good in this place, general manager Charlie is amazing, always looks after me and my friends. Their range of beers is the best

Always appreciate a shamrock on a Guinness! Had a 3 course meal, 2 pints (both had shamrocks) for £33. The food was really tasty and cooked with its own flair! Great pub!

I've only recently started coming into the black horse. The staff are really friendly and chatty. Alice in particular has been very friendly and helpful. As a local it's great to be able to pop down and feel welcome. Our dog can come too and they offer a selection of dog treats too!

Had a boss visit to the black horse over the weekend for a few cheeky bevvies, instantly greeted at the bar by Jamie. He made us feel welcome with his beaming smile and confidence, he was also able to recommend which drink we should try. Will be returning for sure Cheers Jamie!!

The Black Horse has one been one of our local pubs and every time we go there it’s a lovely friendly experience. Great staff, especially Joanna who always takes the time to have a chat and makes us feel so welcome! Definitely recommend :)

Three of us eating each dish arrived with a very long wait in-between. First person had finished be the time the third person's meal arrived. Bar person/waiting staff was on their own. But claimed to be very busy although only about ¼ of tables inside were occupied and none outside. Food was very good, but the overall experience was poor.

I'm a little baffled by all of the 5 star reviews honestly, because our experience today was not great at all. I picked this pub for my mums birthday after seeing all the gpod reviews, but I wish I'd gone elsewhere. We ordered a bottle of rosé which arrived well after the started arrived, and we had to ask the waitress to bring it as she'd forgotten; and on top of that it was the wrong rosé. Asked for a half pint of lemonade, but was charged £6 for a full pint glass instead which is extortionate. The food then arrived and my burger was cold in parts and had clearly sat on the side for a while. My mum also ordered the roast which had burnt potatoes sadly, and cold gravy with my partners pie. The staff seemed a bit clueless also to any questions asked, so overall a real shame because we were expecting better from all the reviews but was overall a bit of a let down.

Terrible. Dirty ovens, old oil, stinking ladies toilets and tasteless food. Quite possibly one of the worst meals I have had in years.

Went today to celebrate mother's day, 20 minute wait at the bar to order drinks. When finally served also ordered food. They had a mother's day menu, my husband ordered the burger ( which was on the menu) only to be told that they were only serving roast dinners. Roast dinners ordered we were in for a long wait. Some of the tables near us had been waiting over 2 hours for there food. After an hour we decided to get a refund for our meal after witnessing other people's meals coming out before there starters & people complaining that there food was cold. Having been there regularly in the past for meals will NOT be going there again

Booked for Mother’s Day in advance. Waited at the bar for 15 mins to order drinks then went back up to order food approx 10 minutes later. Started hearing people complaining about waiting for their meals so after 45 minutes of waiting ourselves we asked how much longer. The manager said 30 minutes but more and more tables were leaving… we were then told another 45 minutes at best and got offered either a refund or to wait. We decided to wait as our table was at 2:15 and we wouldn’t be getting food until 4:45 so slightly too late to try and find somewhere else. The food was lovely when it did arrive but it’s not acceptable when the venue had bookings way in advance and would have had a rough idea of how many people to cater for (especially for an important day). The manager was nice and ended up refunding us one of our rounds of drinks and did explain that the 3rd party booking system didn’t allow them enough time between sittings but I still feel this was a big let down and would say 80% of the visitors didn’t get their food/left. Wouldn’t go back.

Absolutely horrific experience. Waited an hour and 40 minutes forfood which some was cold and the starters came out after dinner. Table beside us got 2 of our starters. After 2 hours of no food the people at the table next to us went home. 1st and last time I'll be there. Worst organisation I've ever witnessed. One of our family members left after an hour and 30 minutes out of pure frustration. How can people get it so wrong in this business, very very poor service.

Had booked for a meal for Mother’s Day (days before) and was called barely an hour before the time of the booking to say that they had run out of food and they have to cancel our booking. No real apology and no compensation for me to now try and find somewhere else for my mother and I to go. Utterly dissatisfied

Had a Sunday roast reservation, advised to come before 5 pm. Got there at 2:30 pm, baring in mind they start taking orders for food at 12:00. booked for 5 people but was taken to a table for 4. No heads up about roasts being limited - only lamb left despite a quiet pub. Decided on regular menu, but the food took ages – up to an hour late, and each of us got our dishes at different times. One order even went to the wrong table. No cutlery, and chips looked like they were on a diet compared to the week's servings. - notably, tendency to cut service to food early in the week despite advertising food until 8:30pm.. clearly an internal issue with staff however being honest with guests would go a long way.. TV got turned off randomly, and to top it off, after an hour wait, got a burger with beef instead of chicken and chips instead of fries. The lamb roasts we settled for were nothing special, one with just one roast potato and another missing mint sauce. No resolution or compensation offered for the mess. Initial offer of a discount on drinks turned out to be nothing special. The lady at the bar apologized sincerely as we left, but overall, management was a letdown. We're regulars, but won't be returning - the Norbiton pub nearby has better service and management.

Where to start.. We booked a table of 5 but shown to a table of 4 and told to grab another chair, unfortunately there were none of the same size so that really set the tone. The menu boasted ‘unlimited potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy’ for roasts - expectations were high. I wanted the beef roast but was told they only had the lamb and veggie option left (at 2.30pm). The food started to come out bit by bit and was late, very late - 1 hour in total. The 5 of us all ate at different times, when I finally received my food, I then had to wait a further 4 minutes for cutlery to eat the food.. Unfortunately my wife’s food was wrong too, they gave us a beef burger when she ordered a spicy chicken burger - hers was even later than mine. I took the plate back and was told to wait a few more minutes, with no apology. The place was obviously understaffed as we overheard the manager tell the waitress to stop taking orders. The waitress did apologise and offered us a discount but when we later asked the manager what we could have he informed us it was just the normal ‘locals discount, which my brother-in-law already had. Like the mint sauce I asked for, I will never be seen there again.

We had a fantastic night at The Black Horse they had an Abba tribute, was so much fun we also had various dishes and they were all yummy. We sadly found out that Chris & Tony the managers were asked to leave by the brewery shame on you, as they are amazing managers and really turned this place around. They are both so warm, friendly and welcoming. To the brewery YOUR LOSS ! we will not return to this pub without Chris & Tony as they made this pub, so sad but they will be amazing in their next venture as in 6 months they have turned around this pub so much. All I can say is Good luck to the new tenants as you have HUGE shoes to fill !

Large pub with plenty of room inside and out with a choice of seating options. Dog friendly , a few tvs around with sports on our weekend visit. Our original lagers tasted off and although staff replaced them they forgot the second beer and had to be reminded as they’d completely forgotten us. Will definitely come back to try the food and hopefully get a better service experience

This place is on the up & up! Hadn't visited for a while as it was down in the doldrums. Sunday lunch was awesome, get in before 3pm as you may be disappointed 😞. Management super friendly, been here for 7mths & it's defo going in the right direction.

Lovely Sunday roast! Extra roasties and Yorkshire’s, which are always welcomed! Staff were super friendly and attentive. Pub has been through some ups and downs over the years but under the new management and chef, it’s such a brilliant local. Definitely recommend.

Very friendly pub, plenty of comfortable seating in various areas. We have visited several times both during the day and in the evening and it is always welcoming and very clean. The floor in the ladies loo survives the close examination it inevitably earns from anyone visiting who lives in Kingston!

I rarely do google reviews, yet this pub gets a 5 star across the board from me. Popped in today for the first time to have Sunday Roast. I could comfortably say it was the best pub Sunday roast I’ve had to date. Food was exquisite. I had the Turkey roast. Turkey was lovely and tender, the parsnips were delicious, couldn’t fault it. Unlimited top of roasties too. On top of this, it is very nicely decorated, tartan carpet, fairly lights inside, quirky ornaments and a cosy snug area with a dart board and board games in the corner. I will certainly be back for more Sunday roasts, and would like to come try their quiz night on a Thursday. The service was excellent too, the owners and staff were very friendly and easy going to talk to. Can’t wait to come back soon! Thank you 😄

We love coming here, it's such a cosy and well looked after pub, the roast (especially the mushroom wellington) is always really good and you can see that a lot of care goes into it. The best I've had in a long time. The pub never gets super loud or full on so I always feel really relaxed.

This is a great pub. Simple as that. Very friendly & welcoming atmosphere. The food is great. Good selection of drinks. Plenty of space and well decorated. It's a bit of a gem. The roasts are outstanding!

This was my go to place before the current staff happened. The staff that is working right now to be precise the manager who claims to be the owner of this place, is very very rude to the customers. I don’t know what happened to this beautiful place, who had the bestest staff before. I hope no one experiences this, it’s not worth it anymore:(

We came here for the first time for our son’s birthday the owners are extremely friendly and Tony is such a hospitable host. We felt so comfortable and not rushed at all. We had several roasts they were all delicious I will go as far as to say this was the best roast we’ve had in a pub. One of our party had the gammon he said it was delicious. Honestly it’s just so lovely at The Black horse., just felt so homely. Thank you so much we are already booked to return next month. What more could one want delicious food in a family friendly pub.
