The best restaurants in Northumberland North East

This has got to be one of the worst experiences of going away for a mini break...originally booked for my partner's birthday in January. We turned up for check in time and the whole place was closed, absolutely no sign of life. I rang the host to see what was happening and apparently the person who should have been there had broken down, but they shouldn't be too long. Could we let ourselves in, which we did with their instructions trying to find our way through a very dark pub to the room we booked. On the first impression the room was amazing, gorgeously set. However, I had asked for chocolate covered strawberries as a surprise for my partner, which there were none to be found. About an hour later there was still no sign of anyone arriving and we were alone in this pub/hotel with nothing to do. We had hoped to eat and drink at the pub on it opening. I rang the host again and it was still unclear when someone was coming to open up everything. In Elsdon there is very little around so there wasn't even a chance we could pop somewhere else. As the evening went on we were no closer to finding out when we'd have someone there to speak to so I said to the host we were driving home. I was devastated we'd been sat around waiting on my partner's birthday, which was supposed to be a lovely little trip away. The host did very kindly provide me with a refund, for that I am grateful and said we could stay another night some time through the year to make up for it. This leads me into the next major disappointment with this place.......we got a night booked in for the first weekend in November. which the host confirmed over text message. I tried to message the night before to double check everything was ok for us coming, none of my messages would send so I rang the pub to check and what do I find out but the room we supposedly were booked into was already booked out to someone else. It's a good job I rang to check as this would have been another wasted journey with a hugely disappointing experience. I spoke to a lovely lady at the pub explained the situation and I was told she would try to speak to the host and get her to ring me back. However, I have never heard back from the host, none of my messages continued to go through to her. I am bitterly disappointed with this whole experience as I have been let down twice with little thought or consideration. I would never recommend this place to anyone.

A lovely tea/coffee shop. Clean, comfy sofas, dog friendly. Lovely cakes and scones all freshly made by the owner. Also lots of tempting scarves, gloves and handbags decorated around the place for you to buy. A delightful place we found by chance on a day trip to Berwick upon Tweed.

We arrived due to our mix up with times but bless them they served us hot food because we were very cold and wet . They didn’t have to do this as it was getting close to closing . We can’t thank them enough . Food lovely, service first class . We will definitely go again when in the area .

Cracking little country local with good beer and friendly staff. Good little place to drop into if you’re cycling in Northumberland and want a nice pint in the sun.

Stopped in for breakfast on the way to do a walk at Kielder. Loved the place. Fantastic , well cooked , quality breakfast. Decent size and good value at £10.50 including toast and a brew. Couldn’t fault the food. One of the best breakfasts we’ve had. Ticked all the boxes for us. Dog friendly. Liked Falstone so much did a walk from there instead of Kielder and came back to the Old School for dessert. Bread and Butter pudding with cream or custard ! Although I was tempted by the Old School sponge. Thank you for a lovely experience

Great little spot, lovely scones, nice staff and pleasant surroundings. Lovely breakfast and lunch menu and reasonable prices.

Excellent srvice and lovely lunch (I had roast lamb). Other dishes were good as well by the family...................

Lovely cafe. My husband and I had coffees and cake. Both were delicious. The meals being served to other customers looked very good. Next time we will visit for a main meal. The cafe is dog friendly...while we were there, people brought in their dogs...seven in all.

We decided to go here for a meal with family and friends to celebrate my mother’s birthday and so pleased we did!! The food and service were exceptional. The staff (Alex and Chloe) were absolutely amazing. They went above and beyond to make her day special. Would like to send a big thank you to both of them for their efforts. There aren’t many places where you receive service like that these days. The food was delicious and plenty of it. It’s a hidden gem. Would 100% definitely recommend

I booked a room at The Elks Head through Late Rooms on Sunday 25th August 2024, it was a last minute booking made late afternoon the same day for 2 adults and a dog. I phoned The Elks Head at around 4.30pm before setting off to make sure we had a dog friendly room booked. I was told by the lady on the phone that the restaurant and bar were closing early that evening because they were quiet, so we would be unable to get any food on arrival. It seemed pointless continuing with the booking, the lady suggested I cancel the booking through Late Rooms and she said that she would authorise the refund. Despite the Late Rooms booking confirmation stating that I would not be charged anything until check in at the hotel, The Elks Head still continued to charge my credit card £115.00. I have attempted to contact The Elks Head several times regarding my refund but have not been successful. I attempted to get a refund through my credit card company but The Elks Head have refused to refund me. Three months later I am still trying to get my money back, I would strongly recommend not to book a room or a meal at The Elks Head.

This is a cafe doing snacks and basic meals. Service was good as was food and served promptly by friendly staff. For aa quick meal while visiting it would be hard to beat.

Had a wonderful lunch! Very cheap too but fab quality! Service was fabulous and very friendly and approachable. Had a sausage sandwich and a lovely hot chocolate. Dog Friendly!! Thank you for a lovely lunch!

Rating as an whole experience.. Food was nice and would say we was not disappointed. However as a whole the service was poor ... late to serve drinks, and the young lad serving consistently forgot what he was doing. Charged us for somthing we didn't recieve and when stating this when paying the bill the other young waitress didnt attempt to rectify it. Reviews claim to be great but we would not return as this was a poor service and ciuld of been easily rectified.

What a great pub, was on holiday in Newbiggin for a couple of weeks , fantastic atmosphere , friendly locals ,competitive prices , catering for all ,football , open mic , very efficient bar staff, 10/10 To whoever runs it you have definitely cracked it
