The best restaurants serving British food in Brighton and Hove South East

I visited here by accident after the venue I was planning to go to was closed for a private event. Because of the name, I had assumed this place was just good for beer but I was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely, cosy pub. Yes, there is a great range of craft beer but there's also lots of other drinks on offer, and the food we ordered was lovely too (chips were particularly good, and staff were very also helpful with dietary requirements). There was a nice, friendly vibe here and would happily return again. Great size TV for football, too (there was a match on the night I visited but only a few people seemed to be watching).

A lacklustre experience on more than one occasion. There is no notification when you walk in that service is via the bar which only has one person serviing or via the QR code. Tonight no apple sauce or brown sauce! Starters cleared away but menus left on the table! I have been for breakfast on seven occasions and they have only had black pudding which is advertised on the menu on one occasion with an array of excuses as to why it is not available. Very often breakfast replenishment is slow, you have to wait for a chicken to lay an egg for it to be cooked and added to the breakfast bar. Service is non existent, it is self service in every sense of the word. The carvey was ok though. This place is crying out for table sevice for the complete service offer excluding the carvery of course, in my opinion.

I’m sure Trading Standards would be interested 3. Shoved in the corner right by a very noisy drunken party when at the time of arrival there was plenty of room elsewhere in the restaurant Disappointing

Food and service was okay, but I was bribed with a shot to write a good review. So I guess it was good!

Maxi, our waiter, was amazing! Really friendly and helpful. Great value for money and included the salad bar for each of us.

Rachel was super helpful and a great waitress all night. Would definitely recommend to everyone for a nice meal and great atmosphere

Closed doors over an hour early, despite there being lots of people inside. Doors locked from the outside, patrons inside. I just wanted the toilet and a pint. Didn't want to disturb the lock-in

Alas no longer the Melrose. It has belonged to The Regency (next door) for some years and they decided to call it by an Italian name but it is still run as the old Melrose but with fewer dishes and prices still the same as next door. For years we though they were rivals, but no, same food, interchangeable waiters and, as always much emptier than next door.

This establishment is excellent for breakfast or lunch. I ordered the salmon toast, which was delightful, and the customer service was outstanding.

Shame I won't be coming back again the fish tastes nice but swimming in greese the chips are very bland they used to be so much better

La última vez que visité aquí hace un par de años y los estándares se han deslizado. Pedí una hamburguesa coreana y licitaciones. Ambos eran luke - cálido y empapado, claramente de un gabinete de calentamiento. Pedí que se rehicieran como eran. Mucho mejor y crujiente, que es esencial. En este punto de precio esperaría recién hecho cada vez. También esperaría que la hamburguesa de pollo fuera filete, en lugar de muslo, lo que es un poco de degradación. Las patatas estaban buenas. Definitivamente una caída en los estándares. No volveré hasta que sepa que han mejorado las cosas.

I ate at this restaurant whilst staying in the attached hotel. Service was good and food was excellent. I visited on a Thursday evening when there was a ‘half price steak’ night which excellent value. The wine list was limited but with a good selection of options available.

Me dio leche de almendras cuando sé que pedí avena, mi pareja confirmó que dije leche de avena, extremadamente peligroso si tenía alergia a las nueces, intenté decírselo al personal, pero estaban demasiado ocupados charlando, también escuché que el propietario es un panqueque absoluto

Popped in on day 3 of the beer festival not expecting too much (being the last day of the festival) but was pleasantly surprised. The pub was not that busy and the staff in the bar were mostly friendly. Good range of beers and there was a mellow band playing. Might be somewhat different on a gig night or busy night but enjoyed my visit.

I visited Hope and Ruin solo whilst in Brighton and really liked my time there. Staff were very friendly throughout, nice range of drinks on tap and the food I had was amazing with so much flavour. The place in general has a great vibe to it aswell. One of my favourite places I've been to in Brighton already and if I come back again I'll happily visit once more
