We booked late for Christmas day for a party of 7 people, food was fantastic and staff were all great although a little slow at serving drinks and taking plates away. If passing a table with dirty plates I thought they would have cleared them on was to kitchen so staff need to be a little more attentive but it was busy. Definitely going to re book for Christmas day this year.

2nd visit for lunch. 1st visit I had the butter chicken baked potato. This time I tried a sandwich. Hard to choose but went for the ham hock cheese and pickle. Bread super soft, ham good qualify and plenty of filling. Came with fries which were very hot and crispy. Quick and friendly service. Will definitely be going back to try something else. Can't rate this place high enough.

Everywhere seems a little odd around these parts! This place is like a step back to the 1980s in many respects including the type of events they hold here.. there appears to be a tacky array of tribute acts on every night to Christmas from āGrease v Dirty Dancingā to āAbbaā and āPinkā (sadly I was having water torture that evening, which was a more enticing offer) Fair play to them here though, theyāre clearly making a fortune as there seems to be no shortage of clientele with full wallets to fill the seats! Shame it doesnāt reflect in the quality of the rooms, mine was utterly depressing and claustrophobic, it was also freezing till about 10pm then when the heating kicked in you could boil glue in there (should the need take your fancy) the pillows were the annoying ones made from thin air so you need twelve of them to make one head height one! Itās very dated, very venue driven, and I imagine many a bride and groom get their bank balances dwindled here on the big day, and if Iām fair on a summers day itās probably lovely.. for me I found it a little depressing and in a odd time warp.. The breakfast was ok but itāll be my only and last visit..

As a family party of 10 we booked Christmas dinner here for a 3:30 sit down meal with all the trimmings. The way the tables were set up and decorated was very nice. THE FOOD WAS A DIFFERENT STORY the toast with the ham hock terrine was soft and soggy as though it had been done the day before. There was no finesse with the service either, it was as though the waiting staff had very little idea of what they were doing. When the main course came some of the meal was cold others portions had been cooked to within an inch of itās existence the turkey well I think it was turkey was from a processed roll joint al be it a generous portion. The roast potatoes had no crunch although my three green beans were ok. The carrots were cold and wrinkled as though they were cooked on a different day. As for gravy everything was completely drowned in gravy why not let people poor there own. My daughter never has gravy but today like it or not you are having it. DESSERT well this was pot luck some of the trifles came in quite large stemmed bowls others in short stubby glasses with half as much. I opted for tiramisu which looked like I had had a piece cut off because another of my party was served a smaller piece the myself. There was absolutely no comparison with any other portion of dessert. For Ā£80 each I thought it was poor, the quality of the food the service and the portions TERRIBLE

So, this is a wonderful pub. We've been coming here for more than 30 years. The inside is beautiful, atmospheric, historic, not to be missed. The beer is generally very good. So why only three stars? I'm afraid that one particular member of staff really shouldn't be working in a customer facing environment. I feel it's probably unfair to describe the person or specify the rudeness as maybe they were having a bad night, and I'll let other customers make up their own minds. However, for us, this person spoiled our evening somewhat and made us feel unwelcome. We did notice that it wasn't just us that encountered such behaviour, other customers experienced it as well. This person needs to reconsider their attitude, manners and approach to customer service. We will return for drinks at some point in the future, but if the rudeness happens again we'll take our custom elsewhere. Such an excellent pub deserves better.

On arrival it looks good, this is we're it all breaks down literally the place was empty but a member of staff turned a couple away because tables were reserved? Really? we sat they're over one hour and nobody showed? Obviously one for the manager to take a look at. Food is ok and the service is totally soulless with no empathy from the waiting team , it's leading up to Xmas and it's about as christmassy as a static caravan . Come on Rogerthorpe wake up. As you can see we will not be returning. Came away totally let down and expected more.

The tea rooms are in a stunning location and make a great destination for a walk. We walked up from the car park in Lynmouth, it's a about 2 miles along the path. The walk was lovely along side the river which is a fast flowing stream. The path is challenging in places and a little rugid. But having a great destination drives you on. Great staff and good food. One highlight was seeing a Dipper (a small rare bird).
